Busy With Work

I’ve finally finished a portion of my work, and today I was able to sit down and focus on having a script meeting with Stanley Tong. I know that I’m going to be very busy with work so I especially invited director Tong to team up with me as co-director for the movie. He’s going to take the lead for me by doing the preparation work for the initial stages of production. When the time comes and we officially start filming the production, I’ll be on the set directing the movie. This will be the first time in many years I’ve taken on the role as the director of a film.

I had script meetings during the day and then went to the Beijing’s Workers Gymnasium in the evening to attend the Chinese Music Chart Public Welfare Song Ceremony. This music chart is one of the most influential in China. The songs on the chart are selected by a panel of judges as well as votes cast by the public. Singers who attend the event don’t know in advance if they’ve won an award or not. They genuinely don’t know the result until the moment when the winner is revealed and announced at the ceremony.

Just as I was about to go out to perform on stage, I couldn’t help but feel a little nervous. Why did I feel nervous? Because I saw a lot of different fans in the audience holding up signs and banners with the names of their favorite singers on them; the fans came to support their idols, and I didn’t see any signs for me. But when I went out onto the stage, the cheers and applause that I got from the audience were much louder than for any other artist who appeared on stage. I then realized that everyone in the audience were fans of mine. This was honestly something I didn’t expect.

I sang two songs, "Zhuan Zhi Zai Wo Xiong" (A Vigorous Aspiration in my Mind) and "Country." Needless to say, I’ve practiced the song "Country" so many times already that I know it by heart, and now I can sing the song while doing sign language actions at the same time.


After the awards ceremony, I went along with a large group of people and had dinner at a club. When I entered the club I thought, “Wow! It’s so beautiful.” The interior design had character and was very unique. I think that today in China, even a very small club uses a lot of thought and effort into designing the décor so that it looks very nice. From the ceiling to the floorboards, down to even the smallest piece of furniture, everything that's chosen goes through a process of meticulous planning and careful selection. I honestly wish that Hong Kong had clubs that were so big and beautiful as well but unfortunately, the area in Hong Kong is so small and every inch of land worth its value in gold; there is either not enough room or the costs would be too expensive to establish a club of that sort. Hong Kong is not like Beijing. What Beijing has is a lot of space so they have the freedom to design whatever they want, however they want.


On the following day, I woke up in the morning and went on a run for an hour. Afterwards I ate some food and then had another script meeting with the director, producer, and screenwriters. We had our meeting behind closed doors. It was like we’d shut ourselves away from the outside world; everybody had their mobile phones turned off and we focused on discussing the matters about the script.

This is what we did for three days in a row – held meetings to discuss the script. On the final day when my assistant told me that I had to leave soon, I looked at my watch and it was already 6 o’clock in the evening. I had to wind up the script meeting because I needed to rush to the airport and catch a flight back to Hong Kong.

When I boarded the plane and sat down in my seat, I read the newspaper and magazines for a short while and then recorded my diary with Fibe.

In the days to come, I’m going to be all over the place flying between Hong Kong, China, Singapore, Korea, and America. I arrived back in Hong Kong in the evening and then immediately went straight home because I knew someone was already waiting to have a meeting with me. Tomorrow morning, I’ll be going to the dentist followed by a haircut at the hairdressers. Then in the afternoon, I’m going to attend a promotional event for California Fitness. Immediately after that, I’ll be going to Shenzhen by car and then flying directly to Sichuan from Shenzhen so I can start carrying out the promises that I previously made. Every year, I will visit the local residents in Sichuan to show my care and concern for them. I can’t believe that it’s been a year since the devastating 5.12 disaster struck Sichuan. Seeing the reconstruction work being done in the area at the moment, I’m actually quite satisfied with the progress and developments so far. I’d like to take this opportunity to say thank you to my fans for your donations and also a heartfelt thank you to everyone around the world for your concerns towards the people in Sichuan.

Right now I hope that I can quickly finish my work on hand so then I can concentrate on completing the script, have a short break, and then focus on making the film because it’s been quite a few years since I last directed a movie. This is my first film in a long while where I will be directing, so it’s hard to avoid the feelings of being nervous and excited at the same time. No matter what, it’s my job to make a good movie and it’s also my dream, being able to receive your support and encouragement. I will continue to work hard and try my best to make good movies.
